[Music] It's time for a new episode of the living room roughions. Your favorite library podcast. Today we will be having a book chat with just Zach and myself because Mallory is MIA. Seriously, where is she? And Carla is off visiting her mother. What is that about? We are her light. For real? Anyways, you can find more content from us on our Facebook group, Reading Room Ruffians podcast, as well as from our Instagram at Reading Room Ruffians. Our library can be found on Facebook as well at facebook.com/wvjcolibrary. We also have Instagram and why does she have that on here twice? Nevermind, I'm dumb. We also have Instagram and TikTok, which can be found at wvjcolibrary. Just cut that part out. Now let's stay in and mix it, feel live and real. That's fine. You can leave it in her own care. The piece on the other podcast I hear people not cutting stuff out is ridiculous. I mean, I truly do not care. You can leave it in kind of like that. Oh, it wasn't joking, I was singing. The same thing was like this conversation. That's fine.[laughter] Continue on with our update. New achievement. Oh my gosh. Sorry. Been back in the car. I was listening to it again here recently because we're doing the first book for my workbook club, so I finally got into it. That's awesome. I'm happy about that. That's awesome. All right, so we're going to be doing things a little bit differently going forward. We're going to be focusing a lot more on individual books and updating some with less frequently. We're going from once a week to once every two weeks. The episodes are probably going to be a little bit shorter, especially these intro ones. If we introduce a new book for our new monthly book club thing that we're doing, we're going to try to encourage everybody to actually read along with us. But we'll be introducing those books. Talk a little bit about a book chat, whatever book news happens to be happening if there is any. And then in the next episode, we're going to be discussing our first impressions. And then we're going to be talking about the book in detail. So fun stuff. It's going to be like roughly three episodes per book. But the first and last one was going to overlap, I think. We're still working it out. We're still going to be doing interviews as those come up when we can get people. We're still looking around. So if anybody knows anybody who wants to be interviewed for the podcast who's written a book. Good for you. We actually have someone on the back burner that we're supposed to be contacting at the end of this month. Oh, well, there you go. See if somebody maybe lined up. Hopefully. And I've talked to some other people. They haven't quite said that they would come on yet. So, you know, they said contacting again in a bit. Yeah. Once we read Chase's new book, we can have him back on. Oh, this is true. Chase. We love him. Wasn't Jasper working on something new. He might want to be back on again. So we might have some repeats. I'm hoping to get some newer new authors as well. So we'll just keep keep going for it. And I'll keep asking people and bothering him until they eventually can't even say yes. Most of the other stuff that we're doing we used to do though, is going to be all going on the back burner. But in order to figure out more of what you guys want, we're going to be putting up a survey on Facebook and a few other places Instagram. And also in the description of this podcast if you're watching on YouTube or just listening. It's going to be in the description. So check there if you want to look at that. Put some ideas in there. Give us some responses. We want to know what you guys think and what you actually want to listen to. Yes. All right. So let's get into it. Today we're going to be mostly doing just a book chat. And you know, all that fun stuff. I did notice in the background of my video right now over here. You can see the top. All right. Like one of those vacuum attachments that has fallen off of my vacuum. So that's a good detail for the video watchers. That's the little little detail thing. There you go. Yeah, fun stuff. This is what you're missing if you're just listening to the podcast and you don't get to see the video. Also don't it's back here and I changed my keyboard. This is actually the real cool part. If you look over here, I have new keycaps on my keyboard. Look how cool that looks. There you can't see, but she's going to see eventually. We do this in video, but we can't see each other. It's kind of funny. Such an urge. Well, I could turn on, I could turn on the discord camera, but I feel like my internet would fail. I probably would, this reason why we don't do it. All right. So you know, a lot of people do the whole like intro, how you've been doing type of stuff. I guess we could sort of do that thing. But where we can just get straight into the books. What are you feeling? All right, we can talk about how we've been doing. Sure, now I'll give a brief update. It's chill. For the most part, it's going to finally be in like, you know, light-ish and not freezing and rainy all the time. So that's good. Ariel's coming up next week. That's going to be fun. I can finally food again. That's fantastic. Are you sick? No, I just been like on a diet for the past like, I don't even know how long, eight months or something like that. I lost 40 pounds. So I was on a diet for all of three weeks. And then Mother's Day weekend happened. And you know how momma and auntie are. Oh yeah, no, they don't do. They don't do it. They don't do it. They don't do it. They don't do it. They don't do it. They don't think, yeah, well, of course. So I came. Well, you just got to get back into it. It sucks, but you know, I was getting like pretty, pretty crappy towards the end there. So I would three pounds more afterwards. After that's outrageous. I know it's probably. It's mostly waterway. Yeah. Like, I mean, technically it could happen. You'd have to be eating such a crazy excess. It's ridiculous. Yeah. The current plan is to be this way for a little bit and then gain a little bit and then go back down again. So I did it. Dexascan, that was fun. I got to see my bones. I was weird. I don't recommend people just looking at their whole skeleton. It's very strange. I want to see mine. Um, yeah. And it's going to be, like I said, it's going to be warm when you're up. So maybe we can do paddleboard and stuff. It should be fun. I'm really sorry. Okay, so I need to bring a bathing suit. That's probably a good idea. Or you could just say that you're not going to get wet. Yeah, okay. Good happen. Anyways, my update. I am out of school for the moment. I start actually the week that I go visit you. This is my very first week of the summer semester. That's good. So yay. I only have two classes then now because my third class is a half a semester one. I got two A's in a B this last semester. So yay. Um, yeah, that's about my life. School being a mom. Nothing's much changed. I have kittens at my house right now. Oh, that's fine. kittens. Yeah, we've named them. Salt and pepper. Two kittens. That's two separate kittens. Panther and chocolate. I think is what Rowan named the last one. I thought you were going to be on theme for the whole set, but apparently not. Could have done paprika. Cardamom. No, I didn't name them. This is the kids. The kids named them. I'm just saying they should have been bad. Their mom is peaches. Oh, so I think there's a moth in here. I've seen to fly back in my screen like twice now. Also, um, I've almost fixed my car. Yeah, I've been following your updates on it on the gram. Been doing lots of stuff. Yeah, I think I just have to attach my shifter cable and I think I can drive it. That's a pretty big deal. Finally getting it. Yep. All right. Oh, no, I have one more update. This is stupid. Oh, my god. If anybody has any ideas, so I have a fiddly fig. It's maybe six and a half feet tall. Is that a dog? What? It sounds like a dog in the back. Yeah, it's outside. Also, I got a dog. No, it's outside. I was like, what happened and no. So do I have a fiddly fig? It's like six and a half feet tall. Won't stand up by yourself. So I've been told the way you fix this is that you like you take it. By the trunk, you shake it a few times a day. And you just keep doing that for like a month or two. And eventually it'll be strong. That makes sense. I don't know if it's working. I don't know if it's working. I've been doing it for like a few weeks now. I've by sometimes forget to shake it. We'll see. I'll update next time here in two weeks. We'll see if it's stronger. It looks like it's drooping less, but currently I've got it like sort of tied up to a thing. It looks like it's being hanged. Pretty great. All right. Let's get into the book chat. All right. I have a good reason for you to go first. Are you go first or do you want me to go first? Okay. The first two books I want to talk about because they are a duology or the clockwork boys and the wonder engine. These are by T King Fisher. And they take part or take place in the Paladin's Grace world, but not the same time period. These take place before Paladin's Grace and Paladin's strength and all those. So it's really good. There's I cannot remember names at all. So there's a forger. There is an assassin. There is a Paladin who murdered a bunch of nuns and was in jail. And a priest of the many armed god, which was he's a scholar. And their job is to go to this town. Did I can't remember the name of Big Town and figure out why the or what the clocktars are and how to defeat them. Clocktars? It's really good. Clocktars. Not clocktower. No, clocktars. Like a like a centaur. Oh, okay. Or a man tar. Yes. Okay. But it's like made out of ivory and gears and stuff like that. Like it's really weird. And it's like they're incredibly hard to kill. They follow orders and do nothing else. They don't really think for themselves. The assassin, no. The forger has this unique gift that anytime something magical comes around or anything she needs to really pay attention to. She gets an overwhelming scent of rosemary. And it causes her to sneeze like constantly. That's goofy. And yeah, and one of my favorite things is the palette and continues to give her all these handkerchiefs. And she's always like, why does he keep getting these handkerchiefs from? But it's very cute. It's a very good book's duology. Look at me. Not going way into detail. I cried both because I was so happy and touched. And I cried because it broke my heart. Hmm. She's getting some emotions in there. Teaking Fisher. Yeah, teaking Fisher is by far top three favorite authors. I love her so much. Anything she writes. So. Yeah, well, there's a new book coming out by her. Well, there you go. She writes a time. All right. All right. She does. So speaking of teaking Fisher, I have also read a couple teaking Fisher books. I'm so proud. The first one was a house with good bones. I read that one. Oh, that's a good one. I thought it was pretty decent. It was a very different sort of. Okay, so stylistically, a lot of her books feel like similar. But this was a different sort of vibe. I've never actually read a book where the protagonist is, I guess what she was an archaeo entomologist or paleo entomologist. Paleo entomologist. I believe yeah. Anyway, it was it was kind of fun. It was basically there. Would you think of the vultures? The vultures were great. I loved how they had them. Yeah, it was it was fun seeing them all hanging around in the cool vulture. The rescue vulture I came or was name is. But they're like all rescue vultures that weren't a issue. The lady runs of yeah. Sanctuary. Yeah. Anyway, but yeah, the vultures were great. The basic premise of the book is that you have this lady. She's a paleo entomologist. She is staying at her mom's place, which used to be her grandma's place. And it seems to be haunted in some way by the grandma who is now deceased. And all kinds of fun stuff happens with that. She's staying there because she was going to go on a dig, but they found like a human remains. So it had to be shut down for a while. So they could like, you know, investigate. Which is apparently an issue that archaeologists run into a decent amount of time. It was being digging around, it's like, oh, bye. And so then he had to stop for like six months or a year while it gets investigated. So she's staying there with her mom. She's very funny. Kind of those old vultures kind of fun. I feel like it was a little bit no, I don't really think it like some people were saying there was like a little anticlimactic, what do I think. So I thought it was fun little book. I kind of wanted to be a little bit more in depth, but that's just like all of teaking fishers books. I wanted to be more detailed than they are, but that's not what they're for. They're just supposed to be fun little books. Do you read cool old stories? Yeah. If I would read the the paladin, one's if you want more in depth or the clockwork ones. Yeah, those are a series. Yeah, they get more detail, right? Eventually. Yeah. Yeah, that's that's something I might have to get into eventually. The other one though, the other cheeking fisherbook I read was a sorceress comes to call. Oh, that's on my list. Is it good? So that one was a apparently this is a retelling of brother's grim, the brother's grim book, sorry goose girl, which I've never heard of. I don't know if you've ever heard of either. I haven't either. She did the retelling of the House of Usher. Yeah, yeah, the Fallout House of Usher. That one was what moves the dead, what feast at night, and she has a new one coming out for that one, is what stalks the deep? They have only read the first one, which is it was pretty good. I'll speak up. There's a show that was like the fall of the House of Usher that came out like last year or something like that. Two years ago, three years ago, I don't remember what it was. It was like all people in like Netflix or something. Anyway, this one is, this one is about a young girl whose mother is a sorceress, and she is just real real bad and controls her all the time. And it's about basically this girl. She goes to a new place because her mom wants to basically just get some rich dude to marry her. And obviously the girl comes along, and it's about her befriending people there, and then getting rid of the mom eventually. I mean, the story itself is fairly predictable, but it is really fun. It's a very good little book. Yeah. It was not what I expected. It wasn't exactly what I expected. How they ended up defeating her. I mean, I guess not spoilers, but not spoilers because it's obvious. It's like that sort of a story. Yeah. But I just expected to go a little bit differently about how they were going to do that, but it's still really good. I enjoyed it a lot. It is a fairy tale retelling, so you kind of figure. Yeah, it's also, it gets a fairy tale retelling. You know what's going to happen. Although I didn't know about Goose Girl. Goose is girl. I've never heard of that. Brothers are a grim goose girl. Never heard of it either. I gave both of these like four stars, because that's what I do when I think a book is good, but not amazing. And these books were good, but not amazing. I think King Fisher says an excellent writer, and she has great stories. And the books are very, very consumable. They're not really short, but they're like sort of light novel length, 300 pages, 250 pages. And you can just fly through them. They're so easy. Yeah. All right. So my next book is called Nightfall by Jake Halpern and Peter Kujewinski. I want to say. Kujewinski. Anyways. Kujewinski. There is an island called Maren's Island. I don't. Obviously, it's Earth, I guess, because it didn't seem sci-fi-like, but I don't know where this island will be. But they don't have sunrise every 24 hours. They have it every 28 years. There's like 14 years of night and 14 years of day. And when the 14 years of night start, they travel from the island to this desert area where night and day come every 24 hours. Make that make sense. That doesn't make sense. Just don't even. It doesn't make sense. But it is what it is. When it goes, it's probably not Earth. Words, magic Earth. Maybe. I don't know. I don't know. It gave me almost dune vibes, honestly, with the desert and whatnot. But so there is a girl and her twin brother. Her name is Maren and his name is Kana. And Kana doesn't look anything like anybody else on this island. He's got blonde hair, he's got light skin. He can't see during the day because his eyes are so sensitive. But he has really good night vision. And then they have a friend who I can't remember their name. Maybe it's a walk. No, line. Line is his name. Weird name. Um. And they go to try to find him and end up missing the boat to take them across the ocean to this desert. Um, then you follow them throughout trying to get off this island after night has fallen. And there's like all these creatures that are hunting them. Um, and it's just a. It's a good book. I want to say I gave this one four stars, which is I know because it wasn't bad. But it also like. Wasn't as good as I thought it could have been. What was it called again? Nightfall, it's all one word. Nightfall. Maybe I gave it five stars, but if I did, I'd probably go back now and turn it back down to four. You see nightfalls are really common name for a book. Yeah, it's got okay. Yeah, uh, you know what this reminds me of a little bit. The way you're describing it at least. You remember that movie with, um, Vin Diesel pitch black? Yeah, like that a little bit. Yeah, so okay, yes. Kind of similar like that. That's kind of the vibes it gave me. My review for it was not bad. Interesting story, even if it was a bit predictable. Yeah, and I did give it four stars. It does sound interesting, but I put in all this criteria. Like I wanted it to be, uh, you know, an audiobook. It had to be like science fiction or something. Um, and like all these different things. And that was the only one that showed up. And I was like, okay, we'll try it. Well, that's a good way to do it. There you go. New books. New seems like a not super well-known authors. They've got. This has got 5,000 ratings, which is a decent amount. So they're like established, but not like super well known. So that's pretty good. Yeah, interesting. Yep. Anything else about that one? Not really. All right, see here. My next one is what you are looking for is in the library. By Michiko Ayoyama. Ayoyama is Japanese. I'm going to go with Michiko Ayoyama. Anyway, it's a cute book. It's translated by Allison Watts. Gotta give credit. Anyway, the. This is like a collection of short stories. That are all basically these people who are different points in their life. Like we got somebody who's like brand new into their career trying to figure out what they want to do. We got somebody who's a neat, which I can't remember what neat stands for. Does it stand for anything or is it just a thing? But basically they're like people who are staying at home effectively with their parents and they just can't get a job or whatever don't want to. And they just stayed that way. It's like a common term in Japan. I don't think it's like really common anywhere else. And then there's like a guy who's old, a guy who's been career. I was sorry, a lady who's been career and then wants to have a or is having a baby. And then some but I can't remember what the last one is. Anyway, there's five stories. The whole point is they're all different stages of life. And they go to the library because of some reason. It depends on what the story is. But they all have some reason to go to the library that was not for whatever happens. So they go in there. They want to like look for something. For example, one lady, she's like, I don't like my job as a person who works at like some clothing store. So she goes there to try to learn some skills like Excel and stuff. She signs up the classes and gets some book recommendations for typing and stuff like that. And then she gets an additional book recommendation, which is I think the first one is some kids book from the librarian. This is this is very similar to the library card. Is it? I've never read the library card. That's a children's book, but it's the same concept. There's like four or five people they go in the library for something that they didn't mean to go into for, you know. Oh, those some of the library and recommends, you know, does in the library card the librarian give them a little felted toy? Okay, well, this one they also get a little felted toy and then they like a scribe meaning to the low felted toy. Overall, the book was really cute. It was a little predictable. I felt like towards the end, the author sort of just like kind of got lazy about stuff, which was kind of goofy. And one of the big things though is that the librarian is apparently enormous. I don't know why that has to do with anything, but she's huge. And they're like not fat, but just huge. She's a big girl. She's just big. She's like think like sumo wrestler except maybe more like muscular, I guess. I don't know. Anyway, she's like a really big lady. But yes, she gives them like little felted things and she like types out all the recommendations and then gives it to him along with this extra book and then they read the extra book and then they like figure out their lives or whatever. It's cute. It's cute. I enjoyed it. I feel like people were playing this up a little bit more than it needed to be, but it's it's not bad. I feel like I want to read that one because I really liked the library card. That was a really good one. I feel like he would like this one. You know, like sort of gave me the vibe of since all of the stories were sort of like interconnected. There was something like overlap in there because the people were me being the same librarian. Have you ever seen? I think I showed you the movie Survive Style 5. No. Okay, this would have been a long time ago. Well, anyway, it's a book. I mean, it's a movie called Survive Style 5. It's like about these five disparate weird Japanese stories and they all just come together at the end. Now remember that. Well, it's fun. So yeah, that's that book. All right. Well, my last one I just finished one Saturday. It is called The Last Great Air Feast or Feast and Fam in The Last Great Air. I don't know. It says Feast and Fam on the cover first, but when you read it on Goodreads, it's called The Last Great Air. So I don't know, but it's by Karina Finn. And this was actually a gift for me. The person who saw it in Walmart got it because on the cover in the corner, there's a cupcake with a bug on it. And I loved that that's how they decided. I have seen this book before I did not notice the cupcake bug on it. It's really good. It's a really, really good book. If you have read the three dark crowns book series, it gives that vibe a lot. So there are two families, the Feast family and the Fam and family. And the Feast family, obviously has a bunch of balls, has a bunch of feasts. They're really overzealous gluttonous kind of people. They don't believe in restrictions at all. And then there's the Fam and family who believes in restricting stuff and only using what you need and not being insane with what you have. And the Feast family has ruled for the last three generations. And because of that, there's many people in the outskirts of the city that are starving, you know, because they just can't find things and they can't afford stuff because so much is getting used up at all these balls and these feasts. The Feast and Fam and families have to have a duel when they turn 13. The heirs have to dole when they turn 13. And it's about the Girl Maryment Feast and the, oh, I can't remember her full name, but she goes by Roo, Roo Fam and then getting ready for this duel. And at the very end, they come together and stuff happens. And I'm not gonna tell you what, but it's very good. They can use magic and make potions and stuff like that, do charms. It's pretty cool. Yeah, there's a second one coming out in February of 2026 and I'm already ready for it. But it is a, this is a like middle school age type book. But it's really good. I've just really ended children's books here lately, I think, because I don't have a whole lot of time so I can get through them really quick. But, no, that's fair. It's good. That's fair. I don't want to, I don't want to give too much. There is a cat in this book named Curtis and I love him. What a name for a cat, Curtis. I know. Actually, no, isn't there? There's a cat on the gray MIC all the time. His name's Kurt, basically the same thing. He's an orange cat. This one is a white one. And he guards the apothecary. Fun stuff. Yeah, it's for good though. All right, my last one is called Unsold. It's the first book in the cradle series by Will White and it is okay. You're building that up and then you're just like, it was okay. I write a review for this. My review for this book was, I hear it gets better after book, too. But it seems like a good foundation. It's a fine book. It's not a lit RPG book. So like, you know, they're kind of hit and miss this one. I hear this is like one of the better ones. That being said, I've read some of the like really good ones and they're just like, yeah, I don't know. I just hate the characters a lot of times. This one seems like it's got decent characters. I the main guy's a little dumb right now, but well, maybe it gets better. I hear it, like I said, I hear it gets better after book two. I'm on book two now. I have not finished book two because I was running into some issues with the audio book. And yeah, I was just being annoying. So I stopped it and I was listening to stuff. I had to read other stuff for the other book club and stuff like that. But this one's fine. The basic idea is you've got this like little valley of people. They're trying to be all like, you know, cool and tough and they try to power themselves up. It's like most of the RPG type things. They've got this core of magical energy inside them. And then this guy, he's quote unquote, unsolved, which means that he doesn't have an affinity for anything. So they just he's just garbage. But it turns out that actually everybody here in this place is just normal. Like they're actually kind of weak compared to everybody else outside of the valley. So he wants to go outside of the valley and save his town. I don't know, it's fine for now. We'll see how it goes. I'll update if it's actually good. Otherwise, there's not really much to talk about with. It's just kind of fine. Yeah. Like I said, these little RPGs, they're like some of them are not great. And then a lot of times they go downhill, like just or they take away too long because a lot of them are chapter by chapter. Like I've talked about this before we're that one. The wandering in where the first book is like a thousand pages or something like that. Nothing happens in it for most of the book. Because it's just a chapter by chapter nonsense thing. I don't know. The lady's pulling in like 20, 30 grand a month though. So she's clearly doing something right. Maybe I should do that. Be better at writing and just write some more RPG and pull that much. Okay. It's ridiculous. Some people do really well with this stuff. I don't. I mean, obviously got mad dynamite, but he's actually really good writing. So he is really good at writing. Also, he's got another book coming out. Did you see? I think I sent it to you. Yeah, it's not you might have. I think it was you who sent it to me. It's not coming out this year. It's coming out next year sometime and it's like already done. It's sort of ender game. Ender's game ask, except from the other point of view. I'm excited about. Yeah. He needs to get on the eighth dungeon crawling books. Yeah, he hasn't actually, I don't know what's going on with my camera today. It's like flickering weird. There's not a ton. He hasn't released any new chapters because he was on vacation apparently. So I guess it's acceptable, but I'm still upset about it. Hopefully he'll come up with something new and when that happens, I'll let you know, he's on chapter eight right now. Out of the new one. Yeah, I've been reading it. Was it good? I mean, it's fine for now, you know, like not much has happened. They sort of say nothing drastic's happened. Yeah, nothing drastic has happened. They haven't even like, I think it was just like they got done with the first thing that they were doing. They finally got to the safe room. So we know what Mordecai is now and we know they open up donuts, loot boxes, and that's all that's happened. Yeah. Show. Cool. Yeah, it's it's pretty cool. It's fine. Like, I mean, it's like the beginning of all the books. So just kind of like, I'll also start and then they pick up and it goes crazy, but yeah, it's just that it's been like weeks and I need a fix. I feel like I'm a druggy. All right, cool. We have anything else we want to talk about today. I don't think so. I'm ready to sign off. Yeah, just like, like I said, make sure you take a look at those surveys that we're putting out. Respond, tell us what you think, tell us what we should do. I've already heard verbal feedback from Derek about how these episodes where we talk about books are just miserable, but that's just because he's a literate and doesn't read anything. That makes fun of us for listening to books instead of reading them physically. So you know what Derek, you try having three children working full time and go into school and then you tell me, I'm calling you out. He has a dog and he canceled our trivia nights because it was too much work. Not really. He's still live in that area. Does he still live in that area? He lives right across the street from me. Yeah. I'm coming for you, Derek. Next week. You better watch out. Unfortunately, you will be back home by the time this airs. He is actually he is one of our most avid listeners. He's the only like the only person I know who's listening every episode. Hell no. Hell no. Who'd be like, yeah, yeah, she did get me. Yeah, he'll know afterwards. So, all right. Yeah, that's all I got. All right. Well, we hope you enjoyed today's episode. It's time for us to sign off, but before we go, only the best libraries have librarians. You don't shush you. That's right. I'm Derek. You can shush. Yeah, Derek. You shush.[Music][BLANK_AUDIO]
